Get reminded to pay a credit card or line of credit

Open this in Talisk HQ

TALISK_HQ can remind you when a credit card is coming due, and tell you afterwards if it looks like the payment never arrived. A line of credit works exactly the same way: set it up as a Line of credit account under Ledger › Banking › Accounts and the reminders call it a line of credit. A line of credit you set up earlier as a Credit card is reminded about too; change its Type to Line of credit and nothing else about it changes.

Where the due date comes from

There are two places, and you only need one:

  • Your statement. When you import a credit-card statement, TALISK_HQ reads the payment due date, the minimum payment and the balance owed off it. Each new statement brings the next due date with it.
  • A day you set. If you do not import statements, or the due date is always the same, tell TALISK_HQ the day of the month instead. A day past the end of a short month means that month's last day. A day you set is used in place of the statements.

To choose:

  1. Go to Ledger › Banking › Accounts.
  2. Click the card's row to open it. Its Payment section is at the top.
  3. Tick From statements, or tick Same day each month and type the Due day, then click Save payment settings. Only one of the two can be ticked; ticking one unticks the other.

Once you type a day and press Enter or click away, it shows as a plain number. Click the number to change it; Escape puts the old one back.

The section opens with the last payment TALISK_HQ saw, in green. It also shows the figures from the latest statement, with the statement they came from, so you can see what the reminder is based on, and how much of the credit limit is used. Paid since statement is there too when a payment is coming up, due or looks unpaid.

The statement day

With Same day each month, a payment that arrives between two due dates could be a late payment for the earlier one or a payment of the newer statement. The Statement day, the day of the month your statement closes, settles it: a payment made after the statement closes counts toward the next due date. If you have imported a statement for the card, TALISK_HQ reads the day off the latest one and shows it; type a different day to use that instead. Without one, a payment after a due date that had nothing paid before it is treated as late for that due date, and you can press Paid since statement to count it for the next one.

What each reminder means

Reminders appear as cards in Ledger › Health, and as a small label on the card's row under Banking › Accounts. Each one names the card by its name and last four digits.

  • Due soon. The payment is due within the next week and TALISK_HQ has not yet seen enough paid to cover it. It names the amount owed, the minimum when the statement gives one, and the due date. In the last two days before the due date it moves up to a warning.
  • Looks unpaid. The due date has passed, your bank data for the card runs past it, and the payments TALISK_HQ can see are less than the minimum. Check whether the payment went out from another account, or pay the card. With Same day each month and a statement day, TALISK_HQ also checks what the card owed in your books when that statement closed: if the card was in credit or at zero (say you overpaid the month before), nothing was due, so it does not say it looks unpaid. It only skips this when the card's books are complete up to that statement: the card has an opening balance and no uncategorized transactions on or before the statement day.
  • Can't confirm. The due date has passed, but your bank data for the card stops before it, so TALISK_HQ cannot tell either way. This is usually because the next statement has not been imported yet, or a connected bank has not synced. Import the newer statement or sync the bank and the card clears on its own if the payment is there.

A payment counts when it lands on the card's own transactions as money paying the card down, such as a transfer from your bank account. A refund from a shop is not a payment. When the due date comes from a day you set, TALISK_HQ has no amount to compare against, so any payment onto the card since the previous due date counts (or, with a statement day, since the statement closed).

Once the minimum is covered the reminder stops. A card left unpaid or unconfirmed stops showing a month after its due date; the next statement starts the cycle again.

The I paid it and Paid since statement buttons

If you know the card was paid, press I paid it on the reminder, or Paid since statement in the card's Payment section. TALISK_HQ takes your word for that due date and stops reminding you about it. Nothing is recorded in your books: the payment itself still shows up through your bank lines as usual. Show payments opens the card's lines in Banking so you can look first.

Once pressed, Paid since statement turns green and reads Paid ✓. Press it again to undo it if you pressed it by mistake.

Reminder emails

By default TALISK_HQ also emails you: once a week before a card is due, and once more after the due date if it looks unpaid or can't be confirmed. Several cards due at the same time come in one email.

Each card's Payment section has an Email reminder switch, which says On or Off beside it. With it on, choose when the email goes:

  • One week before: on by default.
  • One day before: off by default. Tick it for a second email the day before the due date. Tick both and you get both.
  • Skip it if a payment has already reached this card: on by default. Once any payment lands on the card after the last statement (or, with a day you set, after the last due date), no email goes out for that due date, even if the payment is smaller than the minimum. The section then says so, for example "$20.00 has reached this card since Sep 28, so no reminder will be sent for Oct 21".

Click Save payment settings after changing any of these. They only decide which emails you get; the reminder cards in Ledger › Health still appear.

  • To stop emails for one card, turn its Email reminder switch off and click Save payment settings.
  • To stop all of them, turn off Payment Reminder Emails in Settings › Email. The Turn off payment reminder emails link at the bottom of every reminder email takes you there.
Good to know: Talisk only reminds you: it never pays a card for you and nothing changes in your books when a reminder appears or when you press I paid it or Paid since statement. It needs a due date to work from, either read off a statement you imported or a day of the month you set on the account; with neither, there is no reminder. It can only see a payment once that payment is in the card's own transactions, so if your bank data for the card stops before the due date it says it can't confirm, rather than guessing paid or unpaid.
